Looking for a home
In the project "Looking for a home," I explore the world of the inhabitants of Gardinovci, a small village near Titel, by documenting their lives within the walls of their homes through photography. I ask each of them a seemingly simple yet significant question: "What do you like most about your life in Gardinovci?" Their responses, sometimes just one word and other times even a short story, along with the photographs, form a magical narrative about this small place and the people who make it what it is.
Through intimate portraits, I reveal how each home, although similar, hides a colourful array of residents who live within. My photographs highlight their diversity and individuality, showing how their surroundings reflect their inner worlds. The project is based on typology, emphasizing the differences and similarities between households. Each photograph is taken in a uniform way, but my approach to each character is personalized to highlight the uniqueness of each individual.
The way the work is displayed is an integral part of the project, designed to offer the viewer a multilayered experience. The exhibition space is a separate room conceptually designed as a living room, complete with a rug, lamp, and chair, creating the feeling of a cozy, warm home. This room has a door and a window through which the photographs initially appear as part of the interior. However, when viewers enter the space, they are confronted with the thoughts of the characters in the photographs and have the opportunity to leave their impressions.
The structure of the project is simple: the main wall is centrally placed, displaying the photographs, a wall (on the right) containing personal writings (two of which I wrote based on their words, as they cannot write), and a wall (on the left) with a large sheet of white paper inviting the audience to share their thoughts and feelings with me. This interaction is crucial for me, as it deepens my connection with the village and the exhibition space, creating a lasting dialogue between myself, the characters, and the audience.
"I am always searching for home, even when I am in my own room." For me, home is tied to a feeling, rather than a place. This is why I named the project "looking for a Home."
